Matlab primers

To learn Matlab Here are some Matlab primers:
getstart.pdf.
graphg.pdf.
matlab_primer.pdf.
nakamura_chapter1.pdf.

Making nice maps with Matlab

The Matlab package M_Map allows you to make nice maps and to plot your results on them. The package also comes with worlwide coastline data.
You can download and learn the M_Map package from the following link: M_Map.

Here's a sample script: conception_bay_map.m.

Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP)

The ADCPs used in this course are manufactured by RD Instruments (RDI).
This document describes the Principles of Operation of ADCPs: Broadband Primer.pdf
More information can be found through the RDI web site.

You can download a Matlab package called RDADCP for reading RDI binary file from the following link: RDADCP.

Conductivity-Temperature-Depth profiler (CTD)

The CTD used in this course is manufactured by Sea-Bird Electronics (SBE).
Documentation for all SBE sensors can be found through their web site.

Echo-sounder

The echo-sounder used in this course is manufatured by BioSonics.
You can download a Matlab package called RDDTX for reading Biosonics binary file from the following link: RDDTX.

The Slocum electric gliders

Autonomous Underwater Gliders: The gliders are a long term buoyancy driven underwater sensor platform. The vehicles are equipped with a modified Seabird CTD but can carry a variety of other sensors. Due to their particular propulsion mode they are designed to profile the water column between the surface and a maximum depth of 200 m in a sawtooth pattern.
For more information: Webb Research Corporation.
Site of interest: A robot's underwater voyage.

Conception Bay Oceanography

Here is a list of papers that describe the oceanography of Conception Bay:
  1. deYoung et al. (1993) - Simple modeling of the upwelling response in Conception Bay and the influence of Trinity Bay (.pdf)
  2. deYoung et al. (1993) - Diagnostic model of the circulation, in which the density field is used to define the circulation in the Bay (.pdf)
  3. deYoung and Sanderson (1995) - The circulation and hydrography of Conception Bay, Newfoundland (.pdf)
  4. Davidson et al. (2001) - Somewhat more sophisticated modeling of the dynamics in neighbouring Trinity Bay (.pdf)
  5. Tian et al. (2003) - Climate forcing of the biophysical response in Conception Bay modeled with a simple 1-D approach (.pdf)
  6. Pepin et al. (2003) FO - Spatially explicit modeling of fish larvae in Conception Bay (.pdf)
  7. Helbig and Pepin (2002) - Using HF Radar data to look at larval dispersal in Conception Bay (.pdf)

Side scan and sub-botom sonars

The side scan and sub-bottom sonars used in this course are manufatured by EdgeTech.
Documentation for these instruments can be found through their web page.
