Appendix A: Expected Duties and Responsibilities of the Programme Director

The programme director will chair the Coordinating Committee. In consulation with this committee, the director is responsible for:

  1. The processing of student applications, appointment of supervisory committees, and recommending to the School of Graduate Studies each student's acceptance into the programme.
  2. Negotiating graduate student fellowship, teaching assistantship funding, and other funding, with the Dean, School of Graduate Studies, and the Dean, Faculty of Science.
  3. The awarding of graduate fellowships to students in the programme.
  4. The awarding of teaching assistantships to students in the programme, for work carried out in academic departments within the Faculty of Science. This will involve discussion and agreement with appropriate department heads.
  5. Arranging with academic departments for needed courses to be provided.
  6. Publicity for the programme.
  7. In collaboration with the Co-op Educational Services Centre, identifying and securing placements for co-op students.
  8. Visiting each student at least once per placement.
  9. Securing adequate access to computational resources.
  10. Ensuring adequate communication with the MUN Library, Department of Computing & Communications, and other relevant university bodies.

It is expected that these duties will be recognized by the provision of adequate administrative support, and reduction in teaching load.
