Hi everyone.

We had an organizational/review meeting today. We listed the topics we
covered in the spring and summer and discussed what we found useful or
interesting about them. I've attached the review document I put together
in case you're interested.

Topics of interest to be covered in the future by those participating today
were:

* Wave-mean flow interactions

* Planetary (Rossby) waves

* Effects of topography/bathymetry on fluid dynamics

* Effects of surface roughness on fluid dynamics (i.e. drag)

* Effects of heating/cooling on fluid dynamics

* Effects of sea ice on atmosphere and vice versa => mechanical and
thermodynamic

If there are any topics of interest for those who couldn't participate
today, email them out to the group. A few that came to mind after the
meeting today are the dynamics of polar regions and how they need to be
treated differently than mid-latitudes, large-scale atmospheric and oceanic
circulations.

Based on these, we created a tentative plan for the next few weeks. We
plan to review a few key topics that are prerequisites for the following
material, in order to make sure everyone can follow. This seems like a
great opportunity to incorporate other resources in our discussion.

Next week, Ryan will review the primitive equations and the assumptions
that go into them. He's going to also look at documentation from a few
models that employ the primitive equations to illustrate this set's
strengths and limitations. Homework for this week will involve working
through sections 2.2.4 and 2.7. Ryan, if you think anything else would be
helpful, please send out a message.

I'll outline what we tentatively identified for the following weeks:

2. GEostrophic and thermal wind balance - possible new additions would be
their usefulness in describing real atmospheric phenomena and examples

3. Potential vorticity - possible new additions??

4. Quasi-geostrophic balance (this is where we left off before the break)
- possible new additions would be to look at QG models and strengths and
limitations

5. Rossby waves (new material)

6. Wave mean-flow interactions

7. Effects of Topography/bathymetry & heating & surface roughness

8. Ekman spiralling and pumping (review with more info about its
importance in atm-ocean interactions)

9. Effects of atm on sea ice and vice versa

Other things... Ryan created this listserve, so people can send their
emails to it without having to keep updating email groups. Also, I would
like to delegate writing the weekly summary messages to the discussion
leader for each week.
