Hi everyone.
We met today to organize topics and how our sessions will proceed this
term. We will continue to meet on Thursdays at 12:00 PM (CST), 13:00 PM
(EST), 14:30 (NL time).
We decided upon a change of format: Our discussions will be
paper-based. Each week, the discussion leader will choose a
foundational paper on a given topic and send it out to everyone with
notes about what background fluid dynamics are employed/discussed in the
paper (possibly sections in Vallis or Cushman-Roisin). That way, as
we're reading, we can look up material we have forgotten or didn't
understand. It may be that some topics or papers will take more than
one week. We'll deal with that as we go along.
We made a list of topics that are pertinent for each of our research
areas. They are listed below in the order that we intend to work
through them.
1. Arctic oceanic circulation - Ryan
2. Arctic atmospheric circulation, polar front and jet - ???
3. SST and sea ice-driven atmospheric variability - Heather
4. Effects of heat and momentum fluxes on surface ocean variability -
Shabnam
5. Effects of heat fluxes and atmospheric conditions on sea ice
physical properties - Aura
Other topics: - Atmospheric momentum fluxes on sea ice concentrations
and distributions
- General atmospheric and oceanic circulation
- Wind-driven ocean circulation (unless cover in topic 4)
- jet formation and evolution (unless covered in point 2)
Ryan discovered the listserv email address doesn't accept messages from
addresses outside MUN. So, I've created an email group with addresses
listed above. I'll continue to cc to the listserv, so we have a record
of our messages.
Also, if you know of other people who would be interested in the topics
we'll be discussing, invite them to join us. I'm going to send a
general email to people at MUN to see if there are others there who
would like to participate.
Finally, if you know if a really good paper for one of the topics you
see above, send it to the person leading that discussion. It's helpful
to have a good starting point when looking for resources.
Heather
