We had some good (and long) discussion about scale analysis and
Rossby number with some examples from actual atmospheric/oceanic features.
We then moved to small Rossby numbers and where we can assume geostrophic
balance.
Also we distinguished the velocity we get from the geostrophic balance eq.
and the
background velocity which is a different subject.
Next we discussed two cases of velocity pattern through the vertical
direction for
barotropic and baroclinic conditions, in which for the later which leads to
the thermal winds,
we still need to read/discuss more.
Next meeting (this Friday, Oct 21) Shabnam will cover section 4.5
(potential vorticity).
